I Don't Want Poop On My Shoe. Do You? →

June 30, 2016 Emily Rackoff

A couple of months ago, I wrote a post about how the kids and I have "Trash Tuesdays" as often as possible, where we walk around our neighborhood and pick up garbage.

Because let's be real. New York City can be dirty. And it is simply more pleasant to have clean sidewalks and streets!

After months of trash pick up, I'll be honest, I started finding our garbage collecting adventures a bit tedious. So I decided to spice it up a bit.

I know, I know. Get excited...

Along with the trash, our neighborhood has a problem. A real POOP problem.

Dog poop.

Thank goodness?

Do you know how many times one of us has stepped in a pile of dog poop? Have you ever had to clean dog poop off the wheels of your stroller before dragging it into your one bedroom apartment? Yuck.

To address any sweet dog owners who ran out of bags and didn't realize it or forgot one during a walk, our Parks Department placed baskets on the local park fences. Additionally, a kind community member placed bag holders in other high traffic areas. The idea being that dog owners take a bag as needed and refill it with bags from home.

I'm sure this happens sometimes, but most often, this is what they look like:

Many containers are empty and some are filled with garbage. I guess it's nice that the passersby didn't throw the trash on the ground?

Anyway.

At home, we try to recycle bags when we can or bring reusable bags while out shopping. That being said, we still have mounds of plastic grocery bags shoved into one of our kitchen cabinets. So last week, we decided to empty much of our cabinet and put the bags to good use! (And no, we do not have a dog)

Off we went!

Goofy kids.

Goofy kids.

The kids had SO much fun filling the containers that we actually went again the very next day. And if you can believe it, many of the containers were already empty. (This was very exciting for the kids because it was a clear visual that our giving was actually helpful to other people!)

And this time, they desperately wanted to bring the grabber because we had seen so much trash the day before. How could I say no to that?

Coincidentally, Luna stepped in dog poop BOTH times we were filling bags. Grossssss.

Happy Giving!
